Margalit Berta Moses, a 78-year-old survivor of cancer who also battles diabetes and fibromyalgia, was released on November 24 during a temporary ceasefire. A mother of 3 and grandmother of 10, Margalit spent 25 years as a teacher. Her love of her grandkids finds her knitting frequently, and she also enjoys hiking with them. Her experience during the attack on Kibbutz Nir Oz on October 7 by Hamas terrorists is a harrowing account of survival and resilience amidst the chaos of kidnapping and violence.
Margalit, who holds German citizenship as well, was taken from her home to Gaza along with her ex-husband Gadi Moses, who is presumed to still be in captivity. Following her release, Margalit spoke of specific difficulties of her captivity: 'At night I have to be attached to an oxygen machine, and I took it with me to Gaza so that I could sleep,' she said. 'One of the terrorists who got mad at me, took the device from me even though I told him it was my oxygen. I spoke to him in Arabic and he understood the meaning but he didn't care.'
'For 49 days I did not sleep. It was very difficult. There were mental difficulties, there were physical difficulties and every day that passes it becomes more and more difficult.'
