On the fateful morning of October 7, as Hamas terrorists launched an assault on Kibbutz Nir Oz, Meirav Tal and Yair Yaakov found themselves under siege in their home. Amidst the chaos, they sought refuge in their home's shelter. The terrorists breached the shelter door using grenades, capturing Meirav and Yair, and initiating a period of unimaginable turmoil for Meirav.

Meirav's release on November 28, as part of a temporary cease-fire deal, was bittersweet, as Yair remained in captivity. The tragedy grew with the confirmation on February 15, 2024, that Yair Yaakov was murdered during the assault. His body remains held in Gaza.
