Matan Zangauker
Age 24 when abducted

Matan Zangauker, a 24-year-old resident of Kibbutz Nir Oz, found himself in the midst of a harrowing ordeal on October 7 when Hamas terrorists launched a violent attack on his kibbutz which included the killing or kidnapping of one in four residents.
Matan shares a close bond with his mother, who lives nearby in Ofakim and was in touch with him on the morning of October 7. As the situation deteriorated and the terrorists entered their home, Matan reassured his mother in a phone call, emphasizing that he and Einav were in their bedroom, which served as the safe room. Still, Matan and his girlfriend 30-year-old Ilana Gritzewsky were abducted from their home
Fortunately, Ilana Gritzewsky was released on November 30, however Matan remains in captivity, leaving his loved ones in a state of uncertainty and anguish.
Matan's upbringing was marked by challenges, including his parents' divorce when he was young. Despite these difficulties, Matan often took on the role of caretaker for his younger sisters. He is known for his independence, maturity, and readiness to provide support and understanding to those around him.
His mother describes Matan as strong and resilient, someone who can endure difficult conditions and survive on rationed food and water. Her determination to see her son return safely is evident in her words: "Matan, as you were robbed of life, you will return to life, we're fighting for you."
